その頃の社名は「高千穂製作所」といった。高千穂は宮崎県北西部
の町の名前だが、日本建国の神話では、神々が住む「高天が原」と
通じる土地でもある。九州出身の山下が外国名のブランドを考えて
いたときに頭にひらめいたのが、「日本の高千穂は、古代ギリシャ
のオリンパスだ」という見事な連想だった。山下は、この名を冠し
た顕微鏡の発売を機に、「日本の高千穂（高天が原）から、世界の
オリンパスへ」という願いを込めて命名したのである
